Avantasia – Moonglow Review

Avantasia – Moonglow Review

Avantasia, the Metal Opera directed by Tobias Sammet (Edguy), launches its 8 album under the title "Moonglow", through Nuclear Blast Records.

In this album we can enjoy the great voices of Geoff Tate (Queensryche), Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids), Michael Kiske (Helloween, Unisonic), Jørn Lande (Former Masterplan, Ark), Eric Martin (Mr. Big), Bob Catley (Magnum) , Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian, Demons & Wizards), Mille Petrozza (Kreator) and the singer of Blackmore's Night, Candice Night.

The albums starts with "Ghost in the Moon" which is a pure continuation of the "Mystery of the Blood Red Rose" from the previous album. Personally I think is a regular/normal song to be the first of the album and way too long.  The length of the song is what makes you appreciate it later and this is when you realize the beauty of a Hard Rock tune with the amazing influence of Meat Loaf.

"Book Of Shallows" this song is the most epic entry of the 11 tracks, in this melody we hear Tobias Sammet, Hansi Kursch, Ronnie Atkin, Jorn Lande & Mille Petrozza. Sammet risk a lot in this song but it is a complete masterpiece that makes us appreciate all kinds of Metal in one song.

"Moonglow" is the theme that gives name to the album featuring Candice Night on the voice. It is a beautiful song with 2 voices that sound amazing together and is the most commercial tune on the disc. Tobias manages to make great commercial songs and this one I love it.

"The Raven Child" is the album’s longest song and was the 1st single. You have to applaud the bravery that this implies and the best thing is that an incredible song where Jørn Lande and Hansi Kürsch shine.

"Invisible" featuring Geoff Tate is a power ballad accompanied by a great duet. "Alchemy" is also featuring Geoff Tate, but this time with a song that at the opening shows more obscure to make way for the heavier guitar riffs of the whole disc.

"The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" It is a song with epic tones, power, less vibrant perhaps than others but still a great Avantasia track with many prodigious voices. B

Bob Catley is the guest on the song "Lavender". Love his voice but this is the lowest point of the record.  It is not a bad song, but one of the most "pop tunes" of the album.

"Requiem for a dream" the most power metal song of the album with the best voice of the genre: With the great Michael Kiske. He proves all his vocal quality in this tune. It's definitely my favorite song on the album

In conclusion it is a great record, but because it is a conceptual album, it is necessary to listen to it several times. Every time I hear it I like it more. I think that for this album to be 5 out of 5 stars I would need more participation from Kiske and another female voice. That's why I give 4 of 5 Stars. We hope that the next one comes with more guests.

4 of 5 Stars!
